Seven people died and over 70 were injured after a road bridge collapsed in the Bryansk region on the night of June 1st, causing a passenger train to derail. Among the deceased was Violetta Gorynya, a 32-year-old pediatrician and palliative care physician at the “House with a Lighthouse” children’s hospice.
Gorynya had worked at the hospice since 2020 and had recently been on maternity leave. She was traveling with her husband and two children, ages 7 years and 5 months, when the incident occurred on the Klimov – Moscow route.
Her husband, who was on the top bunk, was almost unharmed. The two children sustained numerous fractures and were transported to a Moscow hospital; the infant was transported by helicopter.
The region’s governor, Alexander Bogomaz, stated that the bridge was blown up while the train was passing over it. The train cars derailed as a result of the bridge collapse. In addition to Gorynya, the train driver and two children were among those killed.
