Why Cherries Are So Expensive in Moscow and Their Current Price

Early cherry varieties in Russia have suffered significant losses due to May frosts, leading to higher prices for both imported and domestic berries in Moscow.

The challenging weather conditions decimated over 100,000 hectares of various agricultural crops, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture. Vladislav Korovin, owner of Truffle Valley, Russia’s largest cherry orchard, confirmed that approximately 40% of his harvest was lost due to the frost, delaying the harvest season.

Despite the setbacks, cherries are now available in Moscow markets and stores, with a mix of imported and locally grown options.

Prices vary significantly depending on the origin and retailer.

Vkusvill offers cherries from Uzbekistan at 698 rubles per kilogram. Spar sells the same Uzbek cherries at a lower price of 499 rubles per kilogram.

At the Food City market, only foreign cherries are currently available. Yellow cherries from Azerbaijan are priced at 500 rubles per kilogram, while pink cherries from Uzbekistan cost 800 rubles per kilogram.

Azbuka Vkusa offers cherries from Turkey at 1790 rubles per kilogram and Azerbaijani cherries at 1280 rubles per kilogram. Perekrestok sells Turkish cherries for 599 rubles per kilogram.

Russian cherries are available at Pyaterochka for 579 rubles per kilogram, though the specific origin is not specified.
