President Donald Trump remains committed to Article 5 of NATO for collective defense, according to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. Sikorski told reporters in Brussels that Trump will also attend the NATO summit in The Hague in June.
At a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured allies that Washington remains committed to the Western military alliance. Rubio stated that allies are expected to increase their defense spending, but they will be given time to do so.
Doubts about the US security policy in Europe have arisen, with concerns about whether the US would assist in the event of an attack. These concerns have questioned Washington’s commitment to the principle of collective defense.
Sikorski confirmed his belief that the US is still ready to defend NATO countries, stating that President Trump has affirmed this commitment to leaders. The NATO leaders’ summit is scheduled to take place in The Hague from June 24 to 26.
