US Commerce Secretary Advocates for Reciprocal Trade Practices

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick asserted that reciprocal tariffs imposed by the previous administration were a reaction to unfair trade practices against the United States.

Lutnick highlighted specific examples, stating that the European Union restricts imports of American chicken, lobster, and beef, while also suggesting that other nations are economically exploiting the United States by not buying enough American goods.

Lutnick argued that the previous president advocated for American farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers. He conveyed a message to the world emphasizing that countries should either purchase American products or face trade consequences.

Lutnick had previously advocated for reciprocal tariffs during a Senate hearing, where he argued that the global trading environment treats the US unfairly through multiple tariffs, non-tariff trade barriers, and subsidies.

He stated that other countries should treat the United States with respect and fairness, suggesting that tariffs can be a tool to achieve reciprocity and respect in international trade.
