Green Humane City is organizing a peaceful protest march to express concerns about the handling of a toxic substance leak from the Toranica mine. The march is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, at 12:30 p.m. and will begin in front of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning.
The organization cites a lack of transparency and irresponsible handling of the situation by authorities as the reason for the protest. They claim that key institutions have failed to provide requested information regarding the accident and its impact.
Green Humane City alleges that the State Environmental Inspectorate (SEI) violated the law by delaying the appointment of an authorized person for free access to information. They also criticize the SEI’s supervision decision as incomplete, inconsistent, and lacking appropriate measures or sanctions. The organization further claims the SEI is blocking concerned citizens on social media.
The Public Health Center Kumanovo reportedly gave a vague response, stating that no institution requested them to conduct water and soil analyses following the accident. Green Humane City finds this unacceptable, emphasizing the public’s right to a clean environment and the institutions’ duty to protect that right through transparent and timely action.
The organization demands the SEI, MEPP, and the Public Health Center Kumanovo publicly release all requested information by Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Failure to do so, or providing manipulative and incomplete answers, will result in the planned protest march.
