Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski anticipates a swift correction to the United States’ decision to increase tariffs on Macedonia by 33 percent, citing a likely error or misinformation in the tariff calculation.
Mickoski stated that the government is actively working with US partners and expects the issue to be resolved promptly, as the trade deficit with the US should preclude such tariff increases.
While announcing forthcoming positive news for Macedonian citizens from the US, he noted the sensitivity of the ongoing process and promised detailed information upon its completion.
Regarding the potential impact on the Macedonian economy, Mickoski highlighted that secondary effects could surpass direct ones, especially if EU countries fail to resolve their disputes with the US.
Communication is ongoing between the Macedonian government, various US institutions, and President Trump’s cabinet.
The recent US decision, which imposed new tariffs on imports from 180 countries including Macedonia, set a 33 percent tariff for Macedonian imports.
The government has assured the public that the tariffs will not significantly harm the economy and that they have a plan to mitigate the situation, advising against panic and hasty reactions.
Last year, trade between Macedonia and the US totaled 314 million dollars, with Macedonian exports accounting for 118 million dollars.
