President’s Message on Macedonian Language Day and 80th Anniversary of Codification

President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the Macedonian language in a message on the Day of the Macedonian Standard Language, marking the 80th anniversary of its codification. She highlighted the language’s role in Macedonian identity and its historical significance.

Siljanovska-Davkova called on all Macedonians to preserve, nurture, and develop the Macedonian language, emphasizing that it is integral to their identity. She noted that without the language, Macedonians would not be able to communicate their messages or exist as Macedonians. The President described the Macedonian language as essential as mother’s milk and a homeland from the beginning.

The President’s message also recognized the historical figures who contributed to the development and codification of the Macedonian language. She mentioned Saints Cyril and Methodius, who provided literacy and culture to the Slavic world, as well as Saints Clement and Naum, who enlightened the Slavic and Macedonian world with script, education, and science. She particularly acknowledged the monumental contribution of Blaze Koneski in the codification of the Macedonian language.

The President further underscored that the Macedonian standard language is a foundation of Macedonian identity and a crucial element of an independent Macedonia. It is a unifying feature for Macedonians both within the country and in the diaspora. She expressed respect for Macedonian scholars, academics, professors, researchers, poets, writers, teachers, and all who contribute to the language’s preservation and promotion.

Siljanovska-Davkova advocated for institutional support of Macedonian studies and emphasized the need for a national strategy for the development and protection of the Macedonian language. She highlighted the significance of coordinated efforts in celebrating the jubilee year and stressed that protecting the Macedonian language is a high duty and testament.
