The SDSM parliamentary group has submitted an amendment to the Assembly seeking 934,340,000 denars to provide financial support to the families of the deceased and injured in the “Puls” disco fire in Kočani. The fire, considered the biggest tragedy in recent times, resulted in 62 deaths and over 250 injuries, many with permanent consequences.
SDSM MP Oliver Sapsovski stated that the funds would provide one-time compensation for the deceased and financial support for the injured, based on the severity of their disabilities. He emphasized that this amendment is a continuation of the SDSM’s initiative to pass the Law on Support for Victims in Kočani, which is still awaiting consideration in the competent commission.
Sapsovski expressed disappointment that the government had allegedly chosen not to support the initiative, despite its focus on direct assistance to those who survived the tragedy and families who lost loved ones. He claimed that instead of unity and responsibility, the government had blocked and ignored the suffering of citizens.
Sapsovski asserted that SDSM remains committed to solidarity and humanity and is willing to withdraw all other amendments if the government reconsiders and accepts this one. He emphasized that no other issue is more important than helping those experiencing the greatest pain.
Sapsovski concluded by urging reason and solidarity, stating that the people of Kočani and all of Macedonia deserve to know that institutions are responsive to their pain. He stressed that providing assistance is not a matter of politics but of humanity.
