Orthodox Christians are celebrating Easter today, marking the day of Christ’s resurrection. Services and liturgies are being held throughout the country in churches of the Macedonian Orthodox Church – Ohrid Archbishopric.
The head of the MOC-OA, Mr. Stefan, led the service at the Cathedral Church “St. Clement of Ohrid” in Skopje, announcing the resurrection and delivering Easter messages to the faithful.
This year is unique as Easter coincides with the Catholic observance of the holiday, a rare occurrence due to the use of different calendars (Julian and Gregorian). The last shared celebration was in 2017, with the next expected in 2028.
The tradition of dyeing eggs red, symbolizing Christ’s blood and victory over death, begins on Maundy Thursday. This custom is believed to originate from the time of the apostles, with the legend of Mary Magdalene presenting a red egg to Emperor Tiberius, proclaiming “Christ is risen!”
The red egg signifies Christ’s sacrifice, and the greeting “Christ is risen – Truly He is risen” is used until Ascension Day, which falls 40 days after Easter.
