The Ministry of Finance has completed the payment of principal and interest for the second year of the first Citizens’ Bond, disbursing 1.4 billion denars (23.5 million euros) to 1,448 citizens who subscribed to the bonds during the 2023 auction. This sum represents the total amount initially invested in the bonds, in addition to 72.4 million denars (1.2 million euros) in interest accrued over the second year.
The initial Citizens’ Bond, introduced on July 13, 2023, featured a two-year maturity period and an annual interest rate of 5%. Interest payments were made annually to bondholders, with the first payment of 72.4 million denars (1.2 million euros) occurring in July 2024, and a second, identical payment in July 2025.
The Citizens’ Bond was established as a novel financial product aimed at individual citizens, with the goal of enhancing the government securities market. The Ministry of Finance intends to introduce new financial instruments in the future, including those specifically designed for citizens, to improve the quality of available investment options and expand the investor base.
To date, the Ministry of Finance has issued two series of citizens’ bonds, totaling 41.1 million euros. The second Citizens’ Bond was issued on November 7, 2023, amounting to 17.6 million euros and is set to mature in November 2025.
