Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has affirmed the government’s commitment to integrating Macedonia into the European Union while safeguarding its distinct Macedonian identity and language. He made these remarks during a parliamentary session addressing questions from members of parliament.
Mickoski refuted claims that VMRO-DPMNE refused to participate in negotiations surrounding the French proposal in 2022, calling the assertion a falsehood. He emphasized the importance of not accepting conditions that compromise Macedonian identity and language.
The Prime Minister questioned the rationale behind the previous government’s negotiations if the Macedonian language and identity were considered non-negotiable. He highlighted the potential for endless concessions that could impede progress toward EU membership.
Mickoski stated that including Macedonians in the Ministerial Council overseeing the committee for ethnic issues is legitimate, citing the absence of Macedonian representatives despite the presence of other ethnic groups. He referenced judgments from the European Court of Human Rights highlighting Bulgaria’s obligations regarding the registration of OMO Ilinden Pirin.
He also noted that a recent European Parliament report now includes mentions of Macedonian identity and language, a departure from previous reports that used “North Macedonian” instead. He cautioned against attempts to modify Macedonian identity and language, emphasizing the government’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage.
