Levica party spokesperson Amar Mecinović raised concerns regarding the legitimacy and transparency of the public service broadcaster MRT, during a press conference held in front of the Macedonian Radio Television building.
Mecinović highlighted the parliamentary procedure for appointing a new Program Council and questioned the lack of a concurrent public competition for the election of a new general director of MRT, even though the current director’s legal mandate has expired. He noted the director was initially appointed in 2012 and re-elected in 2015 and 2018, but a new competition hasn’t been announced since, despite the three-year limit.
Mecinović pointed out that the Program Council is initiating the election of a new Supervisory Board, citing the expiration of its mandate, but has not addressed the position of general director.
The Levica party suspects potential political and personal influence in the management of the public service.
Mecinović announced further press conferences to present additional information on the operation of MRT, potential abuses, and violations of workers’ rights and urged anyone with information to share it with Levica. He concluded that MRT must be protected from political and private influence, serving the public interest.
