Investigation Expanded to Include 19 More Individuals in Connection to Kočani Nightclub Fire

The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kočani has expanded its investigation into the fire at the “Puls” nightclub, adding 19 new suspects. These individuals face accusations of Serious Crimes Against General Safety, specifically under Article 292 in conjunction with Article 288 of the Criminal Code.

The suspects are officials who allegedly failed to adhere to safety regulations between 2012 and March 16, 2025. Their inaction is believed to have jeopardized the lives and well-being of individuals and resulted in significant property damage.

Among the newly suspected are authorized construction inspectors from the Municipality of Kočani, directors and the general inspector from the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, ministers of economy, state secretaries and other officials from that ministry, as well as inspectors from the State Market Inspectorate.

Authorities suspect that their negligence allowed the “CLUB PULS” cabaret in Kočani to operate without meeting legal requirements and in violation of safety standards. This allegedly occurred from the beginning of its operation until the fire.

The fire, which took place on March 16, 2025, during a performance by the music group DNK, resulted in 61 fatalities, including 6 children. Additionally, 197 people were injured, with 25 of them being children. The cause of the fire is believed to be the use of pyrotechnics.

The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Kočani plans to submit proposals to the Basic Court in Kočani, seeking measures to ensure the presence of each of the newly suspected individuals.

To date, the Kočani prosecutor’s office has initiated investigations against a total of 45 individuals and three legal entities concerning the fire. One of the initially investigated individuals has since died from injuries sustained in the fire. The proceedings against them will be terminated upon receipt of complete medical documentation.
