Independent Councilors Criticize Electoral Code Amendments

Independent councilors are expressing concerns that recent amendments to the Electoral Code may create an uneven playing field in upcoming elections. These amendments mandate that independent candidates in certain municipalities must gather signatures from over 1% of the electorate to have their candidate lists accepted.

The councilors argue that these changes are unconstitutional on both procedural and substantive grounds. They claim the amendments were passed using a shortened procedure, and that they unfairly discriminate against independent candidates.

Looking ahead, the councilors are urging Members of Parliament to find a lawful resolution that ensures equal rights for all citizens regarding voting and standing for election. They seek a solution that promotes political diversity and ensures fair and democratic elections.

During a meeting with independent councilors, President Siljanovska-Davkova emphasized the importance of an inclusive process to reach a broad agreement on the Electoral Code changes. She stressed the need to adhere to international electoral standards, regulations, and proven practices, while also considering the Constitutional Court’s rulings.
