Government officials convened to discuss the achievements and future direction of local self-governance, marking the one-year anniversary of the government’s tenure. The panel discussion, titled “We are building the foundations of change. For your time to come”, featured Minister of Local Self-Government Zlatko Perinski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Inter-Community Relations Ivan Stoilković, and Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska.
Minister Perinski emphasized the revitalization of the Ministry of Local Self-Government, which he said had been lacking clear direction and support for years. He stated that the government is committed to restoring the Ministry’s role as a crucial link between the central government and municipalities, as well as a key driver for balanced regional development.
According to Perinski, the Ministry has diligently analyzed the situation at the local level, identifying shortcomings and recognizing the needs of citizens and municipalities. This analysis has led to the implementation and support of tangible solutions aimed at improving living conditions in local communities. These solutions span various sectors, including transport, environment, energy efficiency, culture, sports, education, tourism, and social policy.
Perinski highlighted the importance of programs designed for balanced regional development, reducing disparities between and within planning regions, and increasing regional competitiveness. He also mentioned the sub-program for infrastructure projects in municipalities. Furthermore, he noted the progress in digitalizing municipal services, with clear plans for easier access and increased accountability of local authorities.
The Minister stressed the significance of initiating essential changes to the Law on Local Self-Government, the first in over two decades, to promote direct democracy and transparency. “We are laying the foundations for changes that will ensure better functioning of the local self-government system,” Perinski concluded, “The goal is clear, more functional municipalities and more satisfied citizens.”
