The Levica party claims the VMRO government is mismanaging the State Archives of Macedonia by funding unnecessary repairs instead of relocating it to its original, suitable building. They argue the current location, within the Archaeological Museum, is inadequate and endangers historical documents.
Levica states that the Mickoski government approved roof reconstruction for the Archaeological Museum, located on the sixth floor of the building housing the archives. They emphasize that the archives have been deteriorating for a decade due to leaks, poor ventilation, and exposed pipes, all within the VMRO-constructed building as part of the “Skopje 2014” project. Employees and professionals have long advocated for the Archives’ return to its original building, used from 1969 to 2014, before it was given to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime.
The original Archives building is equipped with administrative offices, storage, and climate-controlled depots meeting archival standards, including a permit for a second depot, Levica explains.
The party contends that the Gruevski-led VMRO government moved the Archives for a 600,000-euro grant from European funds.
They also mention that SDS promised a solution before gaining power, but after Zaev became prime minister, the issue was delegated to a minister without portfolio, Zorica Apostolovska, who proposed building a new facility, which Levica deems unrealistic.
Levica urges the government to prioritize the State Archives of Macedonia and return it to its original, purpose-built location, rather than pursuing superficial repairs.
