Gjorche Petrov Residents Oppose Construction of Chemical Factories

The City of Skopje is opposing the construction of three industrial chemical factories on a 157,000 m2 area in the Gjorche Petrov municipality, along with over 30 high-rise buildings. According to Mayor Danela Arsovska, this development would double the allowed population density in that area based on the General Urban Plan (GUP).

The City of Skopje initially denied consent for the construction of these facilities in February 2024. The municipality of Gjorche Petrov subsequently appealed the decision to the Constitutional Court.

The planned location for the chemical factories is within the protected zone of Nerezi-Lepenec, which includes wells that supply drinking water to the entire city of Skopje.

On May 28, 2025, the Constitutional Court decided not to consider the City of Skopje’s initiative for assessing the constitutionality of the construction project. This decision came a year and a half after the City of Skopje initially filed the initiative.
