Former World Leaders Urge Europe to Maintain Environmental Policies

A group of former world leaders, known as “The Elders,” is urging Europe to prioritize its environmental policies despite increasing trade wars and defense costs. The group, formed by Nelson Mandela, plans to meet with EU and NATO representatives to discuss upcoming corporate climate disclosure rules that may be softened due to competitiveness concerns.

Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, expressed her concerns about these potential changes, emphasizing the EU’s opportunity to lead in the clean technology market and climate policy, particularly given the United States’ reduced involvement in these areas. She stressed the importance of Europe adhering to its principles and green industrial policy to facilitate a rapid green transition.

The global market for clean technologies is projected to grow significantly, potentially reaching over $2 trillion by 2035, rivaling the value of the crude oil market. Robinson, along with other prominent figures, will advocate for Brussels to take a leading role in addressing global threats and to develop a timely and ambitious climate action plan.

“The Elders,” founded in 2007, champions peace, justice, human rights, and environmental sustainability, with members including former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark.
