The European Union is prepared to defend its interests by implementing proportionate countermeasures in response to the tariffs recently introduced by US President Donald Trump. This announcement was made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following a phone call with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The EU plans to work collaboratively with its partners to achieve its objectives in addressing these tariffs.

Von der Leyen also emphasized the commitment of the 27 EU member states to maintaining close cooperation with Great Britain, particularly in the areas of security and defense. She voiced concerns about Russia’s actions, which she believes are impeding peace efforts in Ukraine.

Furthermore, the President of the European Commission is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Starmer in London on April 24 for the International Summit on the Future of Energy Security.

The implementation of basic tariffs of 10 percent on all imports into the USA came into effect on Saturday.

A vote is expected to take place on Wednesday among EU member states regarding potential countermeasures to the American tariffs on steel and aluminum.
