The Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning has initiated the implementation of the National Action Plan for the Brown Bear by installing solar electric fences in Shar Mountain villages.
These fences aim to protect farmers and beekeepers from damage caused by wild animals like bears and wolves. The fences were installed at the properties of five farmers and beekeepers who have experienced losses due to these animals.
The initiative is a collaborative effort with WWF Croatia (World Wide Fund for Nature) and the “Shar Mountain” National Park. The project’s objective is to safeguard livestock, beekeeping, and agricultural crops, and to minimize conflicts between humans and wildlife.
This preventative technology, successfully used in European Union countries for many years, offers a sustainable solution that balances the needs of both the community and the natural environment, according to the Ministry. The implementation of this plan falls under the EU IPA project.
