DUI Expresses Concern Over Disrespect for Albanian Language on Government Websites

A political party is accusing North Macedonian government ministries of systematically disrespecting the Albanian language on their official websites. DUI has released a statement criticizing the lack of Albanian content on the websites of the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Interior, and other institutions.

DUI asserts that this negligence constitutes a violation of the Law on the Use of Languages and deliberately excludes Albanians from accessing public information. The party highlights that essential content, documents, and key information are often published exclusively in Macedonian, with only outdated bilingual formats from the previous administration remaining.

DUI views this as more than mere oversight, describing it as an institutional policy that restricts the practical use of the Albanian language and undermines inter-ethnic equality within the country. The party emphasizes the timing of these actions, coinciding with attempts to challenge key provisions of the Law on Languages before the Constitutional Court.

DUI warns that when state institutions disregard or minimize the official use of the Albanian language, one of the major achievements of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, it sends a dangerous signal about the country’s cohesion and inter-ethnic relations. The party criticizes Albanian government partners for focusing on internal matters while allegedly ignoring this attack on the rights of Albanian citizens. DUI contends that their silence legitimizes the policy and makes them complicit in the problem.

DUI is calling on the institutions to uphold the law and the Constitution and to cease their discriminatory language practices. The party asserts that Albanians will not tolerate being treated as second-class citizens and that linguistic equality is a right, not a privilege.
