Skopje City Councilor Stefan Kirkov of VMRO-DPMNE has called on fellow councilors to support the permanent employment of six employees at PE Laika, citing their dedication and the urgent need to address the city’s stray dog population. Kirkov made the appeal during the 62nd session of the City of Skopje, emphasizing that these individuals are crucial to solving the decades-long issue.
Kirkov stressed the importance of retaining experienced staff at the shelter, noting that their work is complex and requires a genuine love for animals. He believes that securing their employment will contribute to the expansion of the company and ultimately lead to a faster resolution of the stray dog problem.
During a recent visit to PE Laika with colleague Toni Bojkovski, Kirkov spoke with the director and employees, gaining insight into the challenges faced by the enterprise. He learned that despite working at PE Laika for over three years, some employees still lack permanent positions. Kirkov highlighted that these are maintenance workers, guards, and veterinary technicians who deserve job security.
Kirkov acknowledged the current program at PE Laika is inadequate and requires revisions to effectively manage the estimated 10,000 stray dogs in Skopje. He expressed confidence that a new program and leadership will soon be in place, but urged councilors to prioritize the employment of these dedicated individuals to ensure continuity and progress. Kirkov stated that politics should not be involved when it comes to animals.
