Cancer Patients Face Medication Shortages Again, Opposition Demands Accountability

Cancer patients in North Macedonia are experiencing renewed shortages of vital medications, including biological therapies for breast cancer, melanoma, and lung cancer. The interruptions have persisted for approximately a month, causing significant concern among patients and advocacy groups.

The Hema-Onko Association attributes the shortages to delays in annual procurement tender procedures and administrative obstacles. These logistical issues have disrupted the consistent supply of essential drugs.

The Oncology Clinic has stated that the annual procurement process is underway. They anticipate signing contracts with suppliers by the end of the following week or immediately after Easter, with the expectation that missing medications will then be delivered.

The opposition party, SDSM, has responded, demanding accountability for the recurring shortages. They emphasize the critical importance of these medications for patients’ survival. SDSM points out that despite public assurances to prevent shortages, essential drugs like Palbosiklib and Bevacizumab (Avastin) are currently unavailable, placing patients’ lives at risk.

SDSM criticizes the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party for failing to ensure the timely provision of medicines. They argue that patients should not face interruptions in their essential therapy in the 21st century and that the current situation is unacceptable. The party insists that concrete solutions and timely procurement processes are necessary to prevent future shortages.
