Bishop Stojanov Announces Passing of Pope Francis

Pope Francis has died, as announced in a letter from Bishop Kiro Stojanov to parishes and monastic communities in Macedonia on Bright Monday, April 21, 2025.

The Bishop of Skopje and Eparch of Strumica-Skopje shared the news with “great sadness” but also with “faith in the resurrection and eternal life.”

Stojanov expressed gratitude for Pope Francis’s pontificate, highlighting his focus on showing the merciful face of God and advocating for the poor and marginalized. He also remembered the Pope’s Apostolic visit to Macedonia in May 2019, emphasizing its importance in the country’s history. The Bishop noted that the Pope’s dedication to global peace, communication, and unity among all people would be his lasting effect on people for years to come.

In response to the passing, Stojanov called for unity and gratitude within the Church. He urged the faithful to pray for the late Pope Francis, asking that the Risen Christ welcome him into His kingdom.

As a sign of mourning and respect, Stojanov has directed all churches to ring their bells at 3:00 p.m. today and to hold a Holy Liturgy for Pope Francis on the day before his burial. He asked all priests and monastic communities, as well as all believers, to join in personal prayer for the late Pope Francis.
