North Macedonia’s Radiation Safety Directorate Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The Radiation Safety Directorate of the Republic of North Macedonia has marked its 20th anniversary, highlighting its commitment to protecting people and the environment from the risks associated with ionizing radiation. The Directorate’s Director, Zoran Bajovski, emphasized the institution’s dedication and readiness to face future challenges with expertise and responsibility.

Deputy Minister of Health, Jovica Andovski, acknowledged the continuous collaboration between the health sector and the Directorate, particularly in ensuring the safety of patients and public health within institutions utilizing ionizing radiation for diagnostic screenings. He stressed that public health institutions operate in accordance with the standards of the Radiation Safety Directorate and the Law on Protection against Ionizing Radiation and Radiation Safety.

Established in 2005 as an independent regulatory body, the Directorate plays a crucial role in the control, supervision, and licensing of all activities involving ionizing radiation across various sectors, including medicine, industry, education, and research. Its work is based on scientific principles and good practices harmonized at the international level.

The Directorate’s functions include constant monitoring of the radiation environment and enforcing stringent standards for radiation safety and security. The organization conducts regular inspections, issuing approximately 120 permits annually and performing around 200 inspections, focusing on medical, industrial and educational facilities. Over 1,500 licenses and permits have been issued to date.
