VMRO-DPMNE: Government Measures to Freeze Prices on Basic Food Products are Effective

The VMRO-DPMNE party asserts that government measures to freeze prices and limit profit margins on basic food products have yielded positive results, citing a reduction in the cost of the consumer basket and a decrease in inflation.

According to their analysis, based on data from the Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia (SSM), the cost of food and beverages for a family of four decreased significantly between February and April 2025. In February, the cost was 23,427 denars, dropping to 21,838 denars in March, representing a decrease of approximately 3%. The cost further declined in April to 21,280 denars, a total decrease of 2,147 denars, or nearly 9%, compared to February.

VMRO-DPMNE also highlights a decrease in inflation in March, which fell to 2.7%, a 1.3% reduction compared to February.

The VMRO-DPMNE government implemented decisions to limit gross profit margins, scaling them at 5%, 10%, and 15% depending on the products. They state that, according to the SSM, these decisions have had a positive effect. The government is also developing a new consumer basket where prices will be calculated as an average across several markets, with the basket being made publicly available. As part of the implementation of these measures, over 600 inspection controls have been conducted in wholesale and retail trade, leading to the closure of eight facilities for violations. These controls are expected to continue until April 30.
