Smuggling Attempts Thwarted at North Macedonian Border Crossings and Airport

North Macedonian customs authorities recently intercepted multiple attempts to smuggle various goods into the country, including perfumes, tobacco, clothing, and other items. These incidents occurred at Skopje International Airport and the Tabanovce and Bogorodica border crossings.

At Skopje International Airport, a passenger arriving from Dubai was found to be carrying 76 undeclared perfumes in his luggage. The individual, a citizen of the United Arab Emirates originally from India, had selected the green channel upon arrival but was subjected to customs control due to suspicion.

In a separate incident at the same airport, authorities discovered 260 packages of tobacco, each weighing 50 grams, during an inspection of a passenger preparing to board a flight to London Luton.

At the Tabanovce border crossing, a truck driver’s attempt to smuggle a solar inverter was foiled by the Mobile Scanner Service. The scanner detected irregularities, leading to a physical inspection that revealed the hidden inverter.

Customs officers at Tabanovce also seized 129 packages of Zeo Medic supplements from a passenger on a bus traveling from Skopje to Belgrade. Appropriate legal proceedings will be initiated against the passenger.

At the Bogorodica border crossing, authorities prevented the smuggling of 3,150 sachets of “madzun” with additives. The undeclared goods were discovered in the trunk of a car during a detailed inspection after the driver stated that he had nothing to declare.

A mobile customs team from the Tabanovce Customs Office seized 463 pieces of clothing bearing the signatures of brands such as Ralph Lauren, Dior, and Boss. The seizure was based on a well-founded suspicion of intellectual property rights infringement.

Finally, at the Novo Selo border crossing, a passenger attempted to smuggle various items, including knives, keys, fishing equipment, headphones, and a planer. Customs officers discovered the undeclared goods during a vehicle inspection.
