A political party is demanding the withdrawal of a new seventh-grade curriculum, deeming it exclusionary and a profound insult to Albanians. The curriculum, designed for the subject “History and Society,” is viewed as a serious step backward.
The political party, DUI, claims the new curriculum completely ignores Albanians, their culture, history, and contributions to the state. They assert that the document serves as the basis for textbooks and is fundamentally flawed in its representation of the nation’s history.
According to DUI, a previous curriculum clearly stated that students should learn the history of their own people and the history of other peoples living in the country. That program encouraged awareness of identity, coexistence, and intercultural respect, elements that have been removed from the new program without explanation.
DUI emphasizes the absence of any mention of Albanians or their role in history, culture, or society. They perceive this omission as a deliberate political message, designed to present history as the work of a single people and the state as monoethnic.
The party believes this approach excludes Albanian students from textbooks and fosters a sense of rejection and injustice. They maintain that history and society cannot be accurately studied without acknowledging the contributions of one of the most important peoples in the country.
DUI argues that the program not only deprives Albanian students of the opportunity to recognize themselves within the historical narrative but also undermines the principles of coexistence, equality, and mutual respect. They are urging authorities to revert to a curriculum that reflects the true historical and social diversity of the Republic of North Macedonia, emphasizing that Albanians are an integral part of the nation’s past, present, and future.
