Protest for Kriva Reka to be Held Today

A protest will be held today at 12:30 PM in Skopje for Kriva Reka. The march will begin in front of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning and will end in front of the State Environmental Inspectorate.

The protest is a response to the pollution of Kriva Reka in Kriva Palanka. The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption is taking over the case.

Green Human City stated that the institutions that were supposed to prevent the accident in the Toranica mine not only allowed it to happen, but also failed to act afterward. The organization criticizes the lack of credible information about the water quality used for irrigation and livestock. They emphasize the shared risk to all, regardless of background, due to polluted water, air, and soil.

The protest march will focus on several key demands. These include the publication of all reports and analyses from the State Environmental Inspectorate and investigations into official omissions in supervision by the State Environmental Inspectorate. An investigation of the State Inspectorate for Technical Inspection is also sought, specifically targeting the roles of the State Inspector for Geology, the State Mining Inspector, and the State Inspector for Equipment, Products and Plants.

Furthermore, the protesters are demanding concrete measures to prevent further pollution. They also call for an obligation for transparency and accessibility of all information of public interest as soon as possible. Green Human City argues that silence enables further incidents, urging people to demand accountability from responsible institutions.
