Arben Taravari, the leader of the Alliance for Albanians and Minister of Health, will continue discussions with the leaders of the Vredi coalition tonight. This follows announcements that the coalition may transform into a unified political party for the upcoming local elections.
Despite the ongoing discussions, Taravari has not yet agreed to the proposed transformation. He emphasized the need for a solution that is not “frustrating or demotivating” for Vredi’s constituent parties.
Disagreements within the Vredi coalition surfaced last month, with partners failing to reach an agreement on the number of mayoral candidates each party would nominate for the fall local elections. Rumors circulated that Taravari had requested 50 percent of the mayoral candidates be from his party, a proposal that reportedly met with resistance from other coalition members.
While Taravari did not confirm or deny the specific request, he stated that he was not informed about the other leaders’ agreement to turn Vredi into a political party. He suggested that they could retain the Vredi name, while the Alliance for Albanians could independently contest the local elections.
Izet Medziti, leader of the Democratic Movement and Minister of Environment, has urged Taravari to remain in the coalition. Medziti, a founder of Vredi, also advised Taravari to cease negotiations with the Democratic Union for Integration.
