Two Belgian citizens are under investigation for allegedly smuggling 209 pieces of gold jewelry, valued at 479,555 euros, into the country.
The suspects, a man and a woman from Antwerp, arrived on a flight from Vienna on April 6th. They are accused of avoiding customs control at Skopje Airport and transporting the undeclared goods.
The male suspect was sent for a baggage check after passing through the green channel, intended for passengers with nothing to declare. Authorities noticed his suitcases contained empty jewelry boxes. He informed them his wife, the female suspect, had already passed through passport control. Gold jewelry was later discovered in her backpack during an additional inspection.
Prosecutors have requested that the judge of preliminary procedure order the detention of the two suspects.
