President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed to discuss UN reform and the country’s European integration, also addressing UN Resident Coordinators from Europe and Central Asia regarding the need for a reformed United Nations.
Siljanovska-Davkova emphasized the necessity of reforming the UN to adapt to modern challenges, calling for more legitimate and democratic institutions within the General Assembly and Security Council, advocating for binding judgments from the International Court of Justice, while highlighting the country’s commitment to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into the national strategy.
Mohammed offered condolences for the tragedy in Kochani and commended the decision to send injured individuals abroad for treatment, noting that the UN should advocate for the country’s EU membership as a small nation that has waited unfairly and for too long.
Both parties acknowledged the United Nations’ role in protecting peace and the need for the organization to reform in accordance with modern peace and democratic challenges, agreeing that the UN must maintain its values and principles, thus proving its benefit to current and future member states.
