The ABA League is set to expand from 16 to 20 clubs, with the decision expected to be finalized at the Assembly on April 14. The Assembly will also address the ownership structure. The ABA 2 league format will remain unchanged, featuring 15 teams divided into four groups.
The expanded ABA League will consist of two groups of ten teams each, led by Crvena Zvezda and Partizan. The top five teams from each group will advance to the TOP 10 phase, while the remaining teams will compete to avoid relegation. Points earned in the first phase will carry over to the second phase, reducing the number of rounds played from 30 to 28.
This expansion ensures no relegation from the ABA League this season, and the ABA 2 champion will secure a spot in the elite league. The method for filling the remaining three places remains uncertain.
According to Serbian media, special invitations may be issued to fill these spots. Bosnian media suggest that Bosnia will receive a special invitation, regardless of their performance in the ABA 2 league semi-final series against Vojvodina or the final. Macedonian clubs have not been mentioned in these discussions.
The selection of the final two teams is still under consideration. Options include the ABA 2 league finalist, expansion outside the region with potential candidates like Romanian club Cluj, or even Abu Dhabi, the future Euroleague final tournament host. However, the feasibility of Abu Dhabi forming a team in time for next season is questionable.
