Growth in Green Loans Observed in the Fourth Quarter of 2024

Data from banks show that green loans experienced growth in the fourth quarter of 2024, with an 8.5% increase, or 2.3 billion denars, compared to the same period last year. Since data collection began in 2019, green loans have quadrupled.

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, the balance of green loans on banks’ balance sheets totaled 29,177 million denars, according to the National Bank. This is a significant increase from the 7,176 million denars recorded at the end of 2019. Loans approved for companies account for the majority of the green credit portfolio, totaling 28,032 million denars at the end of 2024.

Green loans, which support sustainable, environmental goals, or the green transition, now account for 6% of total loans, nearly tripling the 2.2% share at the end of 2019.

The National Bank has prioritized climate change awareness and contribution to a green sustainable economy. It actively promotes green finance through various activities, including monetary measures.
