The mayor of Kochani, Ljupco Papazov, has resigned, and the government has accepted it, after a fire in the “Puls” disco resulted in 59 deaths and approximately 200 injuries.
Papazov has been detained and placed in custody following his resignation.
The municipal council will appoint an acting mayor of Kochani after the decision is published in the “Official Gazette.”
The investigation indicates that Papazov, along with his two predecessors, who are also under house arrest, did not fulfill their legal obligations according to the Law on Protection and Rescue.
This alleged negligence allowed the “Puls” cabaret to continue operating illegally, despite the Municipality receiving payments based on compensation for a catering facility throughout the period from 2012 to March 16, when the disco caught fire.
