A delegation from Levica commemorated the 62nd anniversary of the devastating Skopje earthquake of 1963 by laying flowers at the monument to the victims. The earthquake, which struck on July 26, 1963, at 5:17 a.m., caused immense suffering and reshaped the city’s history.
The party emphasized the contrast between the solidarity displayed in the wake of the disaster and the current state of the city. Levica asserts that Skopje is now plagued by corruption, illegal construction, and a disregard for urban planning.
The earthquake resulted in over 1,000 fatalities, 3,000 injuries, and left 200,000 people without homes. In the aftermath, significant international aid poured in, with 87 nations providing support, leading to Skopje being known as the “City of Solidarity.” The UN’s resolution for the city’s reconstruction on October 14 became a historic moment, known as Skopje Day.
Levica criticizes the current state of urban development, citing the proliferation of illegal buildings, destruction of green spaces, and inadequate infrastructure in residential areas. They warn of the dangers of ignoring seismic risks in construction due to corruption and negligence.
The party’s statement concludes with a call to remember the tragedy and to recognize the responsibility for Skopje’s future. Levica stresses that the anniversary should serve as a reminder of the potential human cost of negligence, corruption, and disregard for safety standards. They lament that the city, once a symbol of unity and progress, is now being undermined by greed and the prioritization of private interests over public good.
