Democratic Renewal of Macedonia (DOM) has voiced its strong support for the citizen-led initiative aimed at preventing the construction of small hydroelectric power plants on Mount Kozuf. The party stands in solidarity with activists and associations currently forming a human shield and organizing blockades to protect the mountain from ecological damage.
DOM emphasizes that Mount Kozuf is a unique natural treasure, boasting preserved biodiversity, clean water and air sources, and significant potential for ecological tourism and sustainable development. The party believes that the mountain warrants long-term protection instead of being sacrificed for short-term economic gains.
DOM is calling for the immediate revocation of the contested construction permits and the cessation of all activities related to building small hydroelectric power plants on the Doshnica River. Furthermore, the party advocates for initiating an institutional procedure to designate Kozuf as a National Park.
According to DOM, promises made by institutions and political parties have been broken, and public resistance from 2023 has been ignored with the reactivation of concessions and permits for projects that directly conflict with the interests of the local community and the broader public.
As a party committed to a clear green agenda, DOM asserts that it has consistently championed nature, local communities, and ecological values. DOM states that it stands alongside citizens who refuse to remain silent and views the fight for Kozuf as a crucial test of whether the state will protect its natural resources or compromise its future for private interests.
