Four people were rescued from Lake Ohrid late yesterday after their sailboat lost steering due to mechanical failure. The swift response of police officers from the “Ohrid Lake” Border Surveillance Police Station averted a potential tragedy.
The Ministry of Interior reported that on June 28, 2025, at 7:30 PM, a distress call came from a sailboat approximately 2.5 kilometers from the shore, near the “Izvidnichki” auto-camp.
Police officers immediately deployed in an official speedboat and located the four individuals in distress aboard the sailboat. All four were successfully rescued and transported to the police station near the Studenchishta canal.
Strong winds and waves caused the sailboat’s rudder to break, resulting in the operator losing control of the vessel.
The timely intervention prevented any injuries, and the sailboat was safely recovered.
The Ministry of Interior is urging all citizens and tourists to exercise caution when operating vessels and to monitor weather conditions, particularly when using sailboats and non-motorized watercraft.
