Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska announced significant improvements in the education system, including increased teacher salaries, the reintroduction of history and geography as national subjects, and the provision of textbooks for all subjects. These reforms aim to address past shortcomings and build a strong, modern, and inclusive national education system.
Speaking at a panel discussion, Janevska stated that the current government inherited a system burdened with debt, a lack of textbooks, and declining student numbers. She criticized the previous administration for experimenting with education, citing the absence of textbooks and the attempt to integrate history and geography into a combined subject.
A key action taken by the government was to reinstate history and geography as separate national subjects after the previous government had attempted to erase them by incorporating them into an integrated system. In addition, textbooks have been printed, including foreign language textbooks, which have not been available for seven years.
To restore confidence in the Ministry of Education and Science and the government, teachers’ salaries have been increased by over 12% within six months. A four-year agreement has been signed to ensure continuous salary increases for teachers. Moreover, teachers in higher education will see their salaries increase by more than 14% over the next four years.
