The Association of Sports Betting Shops of Macedonia (ASOM) has cautioned political figures against shutting down the legal gambling sector, asserting that such action would fuel crime and illegal betting operations. The association emphasizes the industry’s strict regulation, significant employment of over 10,000 individuals, and consistent tax contributions.
ASOM has voiced strong criticism of the government, alleging avoidance of public discourse on gambling legislation and developing secret versions of the law without expert or public input. They advocate for open debate and question the motives of politicians while noting that the gambling sector is being held “hostage” for political interests, endangering thousands of jobs.
The association argues that closing legal gambling venues would simply drive the activity underground, leading to a surge in illegal gambling dens, increased crime rates, and substantial financial losses for the state. They cite Albania’s experience with a similar ban, which resulted in increased crime and unregulated gambling, ultimately leading to the re-establishment of legal betting shops.
ASOM denounces what it sees as hypocrisy, pointing to the state’s involvement in online gambling and video lottery games while simultaneously criticizing legal gambling organizers. The organization says politicians exploit the legal betting sector for political gain rather than focusing on regulation and citizen protection.
ASOM firmly opposes the closure of legal gambling, deeming it detrimental to citizens, employees, and player safety. The association is calling for an immediate public discussion to address concerns and create sustainable legislation that benefits all citizens and is prepared to defend the industry against political attacks using all available measures.
