Macedonia Faces Rising Inflation and Government Official Salary Increases

Macedonia is grappling with a surge in prices and inflation, exacerbating economic concerns for its citizens. Recent data reveals a significant increase in the annual inflation rate, coupled with a decision by the government to raise salaries for officials, sparking criticism from opposition parties.

According to the State Statistical Office, the annual inflation rate in May 2025 reached 3.3%, a notable increase from 2.6% in April. The monthly inflation rate also climbed to 1.5%, marking the highest level recorded this year.

The opposition party SDSM (Social Democratic Union of Macedonia) has strongly criticized the government’s response to the rising inflation. They argue that the government lacks a plan to safeguard the citizens’ standard of living and is instead prioritizing the financial interests of officials by increasing their salaries.

SDSM claims that prices are steadily increasing due to the government’s failure to implement necessary measures. They accuse the government of having no economic vision, strategy, or empathy for the struggles of the citizens. According to SDSM, the current administration is solely focused on personal interests and self-enrichment.

The opposition party is demanding immediate intervention and concrete measures to protect the citizens’ standard of living. They are urging the government to move beyond empty promises and manipulations and address the pressing economic challenges faced by the population.
