NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, scheduled for June 24 and 25. Sources confirmed the invitation to broadcaster NOS.
While Zelensky had previously stated Ukraine would be represented at the meeting, his personal attendance remained uncertain. Several European nations, including the Netherlands, have emphasized the importance of Zelensky’s presence.
The logistics of incorporating a discussion with Zelensky into the summit agenda are still being determined, according to NOS Nato correspondent Kysia Hekster. Zelensky will not participate in Wednesday’s meeting, which is exclusively for heads of state and government leaders from the 32 member countries.
He might attend the dinner hosted by King Willem-Alexander the night before the summit, although seating arrangements could present a challenge. Hekster noted that American President Donald Trump, who has confirmed his attendance, may be unwilling to share attention with Zelensky, given their strained relationship.
Hekster added that Secretary General Rutte faces the task of resolving the seating arrangement complexities.
One of the primary topics for discussion at the summit is defense spending among NATO countries. The current target is 2% of GDP, but there is a possibility it will be raised to 5%.
