The Groninger Studentenbond (GSb) has emerged as the biggest winner in the 2025 University of Groningen faculty council elections, securing a total of eight seats across multiple faculties. This includes representation in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), and the Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences (GMW).
GSb’s chair, Jitske Wielers, expressed surprise and gratitude, acknowledging the power of the members’ involvement. Wielers attributed the party’s success to its commitment to democratic transparency and grassroots organizing.
The campaign emphasized core issues such as faculty budget cuts, student representation, and university transparency. GSb members actively protested and organized around these issues throughout the year.
The party’s approach involved both traditional campaign methods, like distributing flyers and ice cream, combined with activism and internal democracy. GSb emphasized that their election program was created and approved by its members, underlining the collective nature of the party.
The high-energy campaign week was a memorable experience for members. GSb differentiates itself from other parties by not being afraid to challenge authority, highlighting the importance of unity in advocating for student interests.
In other results, Lijst Calimero remains the leading party in the University Council, increasing its seats from five to six. SOG secured four seats, and De Vrije Student maintained two. Lijst Calimero will transfer one seat to SOG, resulting in each party holding five seats due to a pre-existing agreement.
