The Netherlands Records First Tropical Day of the Year

The Netherlands experienced its first official tropical day of the year on Thursday, June 13, 2025, with a temperature of 31.8° Celsius recorded at the De Bilt weather station near Utrecht. This marks a new all-time high for the date since record-keeping began in 1901.

The previous record for June 13 was 31.5°C, set in 1964. Other parts of the country saw even higher temperatures, with Gilze-Rijen reaching 33.5°C and Eindhoven recording 32.8°C. The national record for this date, 34°C, was measured in Volkel in 1964.

This is also the hottest day of the year so far and the sixth date-specific heat record of 2025. Earlier in the year, on February 21, De Bilt recorded 17.9°C, the earliest such warm temperature ever measured. Additional records were set or equaled on March 6, 7, 8, and 21.

The heatwave is expected to break with storms moving in from the southwest later on Friday evening and overnight. These storms will move northward across the western half of the country, potentially bringing hail, strong gusts, and heavy rain in a short time. Other areas will remain dry with increasing cloud cover.

Overnight temperatures will drop to between 16°C and 19°C, with large cities staying warmer at around 20°C.

Saturday will see a return of sunshine and rising temperatures, with inland areas reaching 28°C to 32°C, particularly along the eastern border. Coastal regions will be slightly cooler, ranging from 23°C in Zeeland to approximately 27°C further north. Localized thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, again with the risk of hail and heavy rain. A westerly wind will bring cooler air from the coast.

From Sunday onward, conditions will remain dry with only a slight chance of rain. Temperatures are expected to range from 21°C in the west to 26°C in the southeast.
