Roelien Kamminga (VVD) will officially begin her term as the mayor of Groningen on Monday afternoon. She will be sworn in during a special council meeting at 5:30 PM.
Kamminga, who previously served as a member of the Dutch House of Representatives for the VVD since 2021, has deep roots in the region. Born in Zuidbroek, she also held the position of Program Director for Groningen Versterken en Perspectief at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations prior to her time in the House of Representatives. In that role, she oversaw the execution of the reinforcement operation in the earthquake-affected area, among other responsibilities.
Kamminga’s appointment follows the tenure of Mirjam in ‘t Veld, who served as acting mayor for eight months after Koen Schuiling’s early departure.
The new mayor faces a demanding schedule, including the development of a safety plan for nightlife based on recent recommendations, and the further refinement of the Nei Begun economic agenda within the next six months.
