Rinus Israël Passes Away at 82

Rinus Israël, the legendary captain who led Feyenoord to their historic 1970 European Cup victory, has died at the age of 82. His grandson announced the passing in a Facebook post.

Israël, affectionately known as “Iron Rinus,” was a cornerstone defender for Feyenoord during their golden era. He arrived to the team in 1966, where he quickly established a strong partnership with Theo Laseroms.

His most significant achievement came in 1970 when he captained Feyenoord to become the first Dutch club to win the European Cup I. As captain, Israël had the honor of being the first Dutchman to lift the prestigious trophy.

Beyond his club success, Israël also represented the Dutch national team in 47 international matches. He was a part of the squad that reached the 1974 World Cup final in West Germany, where they were defeated by the host nation.

Before his iconic period at Feyenoord, Israël began his professional career with Amsterdam DWS. Later, he also played for Excelsior and PEC Zwolle. Following his playing career, Israël transitioned into coaching, managing several clubs, but did not replicate the remarkable triumphs he experienced as a player.
