Red Line Demonstration Protests Israeli Policy at the International Court of Justice

Thousands of demonstrators, unified by wearing red, marched to the Peace Palace in The Hague on Sunday to protest Israeli policy. The demonstration, a joint effort of over ninety aid organizations, aimed to symbolize the “red line” they believe Israel is crossing.

The protest began at the Malieveld around 1:30 PM, from where the large group proceeded to the International Court of Justice of the United Nations. The collective of red-clad activists represented a visual boundary against Israel’s actions, according to organizers.

Prominent organizations such as Oxfam Novib, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, PAX, Save the Children, and The Rights Forum joined forces for this demonstration. Michiel Servaes, director of Oxfam and one of the initiative’s leaders, emphasized the mobilization of a “silent majority” after a period of perceived paralysis due to the political climate in the Netherlands.

Outgoing Prime Minister Schoof was invited to address the crowd at the Malieveld but reportedly did not respond. His previous lack of engagement with a similar demonstration, coupled with his congratulations to the Center for Information and Documentation Israel (Cidi) on the same day, had previously drawn criticism.

Estimates of the crowd size are difficult to confirm, as police have not released official figures. However, NS reported overcrowded trains to The Hague earlier in the afternoon, indicating a significant turnout. A previous protest four weeks earlier drew an estimated 100,000 participants.
