A podcast series titled “Onaantastbaar” (Untouchable) delves into the alleged abuse of power by Frank William, the former director of the Dutch Muslim Broadcasting Organization (NMO), exploring how he remained in his position despite numerous allegations. The NTR and NPO Radio 1 podcast examines the rise and fall of the NMO, presenting a picture of the organization based on in-depth research and interviews with over 150 people.
The series, spanning eight episodes, highlights the NMO’s unique position in Dutch public broadcasting between 1993 and 2010, where it offered a platform for breaking taboos and criticizing Islam. However, behind the scenes, William is accused of creating a culture of fear, engaging in workplace abuse, sexual intimidation, and threats of physical violence.
In 2007, William was forced to leave the NMO, and in 2009, he was arrested on suspicion of misusing broadcasting funds. A year later, the NMO declared bankruptcy, marking the first time a public broadcaster in the Netherlands had done so.
The podcast makers, Jair Stein, Jan Maarten Deurvorst, and Huda Rais, spent over three years investigating the NMO, uncovering confidential reports and struggling to gain the trust of those involved. They emphasize the importance of understanding how such a culture could persist for so long and why no one intervened.
The team also addressed their own biases in investigating a story involving people with Islamic backgrounds, ensuring a balanced perspective. The ninth and final episode remains open, as the makers are still seeking William’s perspective on the events and his reflections on his actions.
