Several Dutch parents are opening up about the profound impact of their children’s crimes on their lives, relationships, and sense of security. They recount experiences ranging from dealing with addiction-fueled robberies to navigating the aftermath of violent crimes and drug trafficking arrests.

Frans and Ineke van Es’s son, Max, committed a violent home invasion at 18, resulting in a one-year prison sentence. The parents described Max’s descent into drug addiction following Ineke’s serious health issues. The couple detailed their unsuccessful attempts to help Max through therapy and rehabilitation, his involvement in robberies to fund his addiction, and their devastation upon discovering his participation in a home invasion.

Femke de Poorter’s son, Joep, was arrested in Germany with 33 kilos of cocaine and sentenced to six years and six months in prison. Femke described Joep as a caring and hardworking individual who became involved in drug trafficking due to financial struggles. The arrest led to the death of Joep’s father and a rift within the family. Femke finds solace in visiting Joep in prison and receives support from Attention for Those Left Behind, an organization aiding families of prisoners.

Dave Hovenga’s 17-year-old son, Roy, committed a fatal stabbing, leading to a 21-month prison sentence with additional youth detention. Hovenga described the shock and trauma experienced by his family after the incident, including social isolation, threats, and the need to relocate. He founded Stichting Sang, a support center for relatives of detainees, to offer assistance and a listening ear to others facing similar challenges.
