Parents Share the Impact of Their Children’s Crimes and Imprisonment

The families of convicted individuals often face immense emotional and social challenges as they grapple with the consequences of their loved ones’ actions. These challenges can include social isolation, feelings of guilt and shame, and financial strain.

Three parents shared their experiences of having a child imprisoned, highlighting the profound impact on their lives and relationships. They spoke about the shock, grief, and sense of isolation that followed their children’s arrests, as well as the challenges of navigating the legal system and maintaining family bonds.

One parent, Ineke, whose son Max was imprisoned for violent home robbery fueled by drug addiction, recounted the difficulties of watching him struggle with addiction and the devastation of his crime. She and her husband, Frans, described the humiliation of visiting their son in prison and the strain on their marriage.

Another parent, Femke de Poorter, shared the story of her son Joep, who was arrested in Germany with 33 kilos of cocaine in his car. She recounted the devastating impact on her family, including the death of her husband, who couldn’t cope with the situation.

Dave Hovenga, the father of Roy, who was sentenced to prison for a fatal stabbing, spoke about the social isolation his family faced after the crime. He started a foundation to support other relatives of prisoners, offering a listening ear and advocating for more professional support for this often-overlooked group.

Despite the difficulties, all three parents expressed unconditional love for their children and a commitment to supporting them through their imprisonment and beyond. They also emphasized the importance of seeking help and support for themselves, whether through therapy, support groups, or simply talking to someone who understands their situation.
